En 1969, elle s'est scindée en deux factions: la "Provisional IRA", qui a recours à la violence, et la "Official IRA", qui privilégiait un réglement politique du conflit en Irlande du Nord. En 1995, au début du processus de paix qui a abouti à l'accord de 1998 (le Good Friday Agreement, voir cet encadré) la "Provisional IRA" a déclaré un cessez-le-feu. Cependant, quelques groupes dissidents, notamment la "Continuity IRA" et la "Real IRA", ont poursuivi les actes terroristes. -

Sinn Féin [‚ʃɪn'feɪn]le Sinn Féin (faction politique de l'IRA)ⓘ SINN FÉIN Il s'agit d'un mouvement nationaliste irlandais fondé en 1902, qui se consacrait à l'origine à la lutte pour l'indépendance de l'Irlande et à la renaissance de la culture gaélique. Force politique vitale en Irlande à partir de 1916, il devient après la Seconde Guerre mondiale la branche politique de l'IRA (Irish Republican Army) qui œuvre pour la réunification du pays, coupé en deux après l'accès à l'indépendance du sud de l'île en 1921 (l'Irlande du Nord restant attachée au Royaume-Uni). Tourné vers le socialisme, il remporte cinq sièges en Irlande du Nord aux élections britanniques de 1982. Après 1994, le Sinn Féin participe au processus de paix en Irlande du Nord, qui aboutit en 1998 à l'établissement d'une assemblée semi-autonome à Belfast, dont le Sinn Féin fait partie.
